A brief examination of the Watson home movie catalog reveals an interesting pattern: Duncan Watson is nowhere to be found.
Traditionally, home movies are small scale productions that are entirely done in-house, with the members of the family taking on the lead roles. This is not the case in the Watson household. Emmett Watson, who is a financial advisor by trade, takes his filmmaking seriously. “Yeah I do the finance stuff to pay the bills, but this is my real passion,” said Mr. Watson “And I’ll be damned if I let my son interfere with my passion just because he’s my son.”
“I’m not saying I’ll never cast Caleb as a lead actor, I’m just saying he has to earn it like everyone else. Last year, when we held auditions for Playroom Blade Runner, I wanted to give the lead to Caleb, but then the Jefferson kid came in to read for the part and he absolutely crushed it. I can’t pass up a good performance just to make my kid happy. It isn’t worth it for me.”
Mr. Watson is currently in the early stages of production for his newest project Playroom Behind Enemy Lines, where Johnny Roddy, a local 4th grader, will play the lead. Playroom Behind Enemy Lines will be shot exclusively on the family’s Panasonic camcorder.
When asked if he had any plans to upgrade his equipment, Mr. Watson replied, “This works just fine.”
Devastating news for Caleb, but great news for the home-movie community. We are looking forward to seeing Playroom Behind Enemy Lines in the near future.
