Well, here's about as great a send off a team could give...
After announcing early this week that the Mets would not be renewing the contract of manager Terry Collins, many on the team felt a mix of sadness and hope. Although changes clearly need to be made with the Mets hierarchy it's hard ignore the impact Collins made on the team. That's why the Mets decided to honor Collins by giving him a giant sack of drier lint from all the uniforms and laundry during his time with the Mets.
That's right. There wasn't a dry eye at Citi Field on Monday afternoon when Jacob Degrom and Noah Syndergaard waltzed out onto the field with a huge canvas sack full of white, grey, orange, and blue lint. Collins erupted into his signature moan and uttered his famous catchphrase from his time on the team, "I'm the luckiest stinky boy in the whole of baseball world!"
As he hugged and smelled his sack of drier lint the entire team applauded and cheered while Stephen Matz played "Pomp & Circumstance" on his recorder. No word yet as to who will replace Collins next season but we hope they will be welcomed with as much love as was given to Collins.
